Robin Bralley

Robin Bralley is co-owner and publisher of Forsyth Family Magazine.  She is a Forsyth County native and wouldn’t have it any other way!  She has been married to Tim Bralley for the past 20 years and feels blessed beyond compare to have such a wonderful partner to share life with.  They have two amazing daughters, Briana and Morgan, who currently attend Robin’s alma mater, West Forsyth High School, where she graduated from in 1981.  Robin became a “working girl” at 16 with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, thanks to her best friend Lisa Irwin (White at the time).  She recalls “sweet” memories of her first job and, unlike her younger brothers at the time, never tired of the “Hot and Now” treats!  After high school graduation, she was working at Brendle’s, a local catalog showroom, when she got the call for an interview with DMD (a division of Sara Lee at the time).  After a couple years of doing warehouse labor, she decided to enroll in the High Point University evening degree program and received her degree in 1992.  This opened the door of opportunity for her in their corporate office where she would hold a variety of positions from administrative assistant to marketing manager during her tenure at Sara Lee/Hbi.  New opportunities were sent her way in the summer of 2007 and Forsyth Family was launched in November 2007 with long time friend Keela Johnson, publisher of Forsyth Woman.  Robin and her family attend Sunrise UMC in Lewisville and are very active in the life of their church.  Robin is passionate about family and her community and sees her role in Forsyth Family as just another way to give back to others.

Timothy Sellner  - Editor

Timothy Sellner is currently Professor Emeritus of German at Wake Forest University, where he taught from 1970 to 2003.  For nine years, he was also Chairman of the Department of German and Russian.  After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1960, he went to Germany to study animal behavior.

In 1961, when he was about to be drafted into the U.S. Army as a result of the building of the Berlin Wall, he enlisted instead and spent the next three years stationed in Miami, Florida, where he met his future wife, Vicki, then in nurses' training. He taught German in high school for two years after the army, finally earning his Ph.D from the University of Michigan in 1970. He has spent much of his career translating the works of Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel, an eighteenth-century German thinker who did perhaps more than any man in history to raise the status of women in society and marriage.  This year Tim published Hippel's "Collected Writings on the Status of Women" with Xlibris Press. Tim works often as a docent at Reynolda House, and he and Vicki are very active in their church, Augsburg Lutheran.

They presently have three children and four grandchildren.

Carolyn S. Peterson, Senior Staff Writer

The wise philosopher and humorist Erma Bombeck once said, “When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’”  That sums up the way I feel about my love of writing and my job as writer for Forsyth Family magazine.  Finding my passion in life – writing – took me a while (30 some years to be truthful), so I feel like I have a lot of time to make up for and even more stories to tell.
For me there is no greater reward than to tell the story of local families like the Welborns and Clarks, who cope daily with a child with special needs, yet reach out to other families to bear their burdens, or like Claudia Page, a single mom who owns and operates a photography business, all while keeping her daughter her number one priority.  These families inspire me to work long hours, just to possibly do their stories justice.  Each interview I’ve done has left me more grateful for my blessings, more inspired to meet the next family and more certain than ever that ‘everyone has a story.’
I think my love for my writing comes from the fact that I was a very late bloomer.  I majored in Journalism and Psychology, which at the time I thought was a strange combination, but now those lessons learned in both subjects come in very handy.  I always knew that I loved writing, but never had the confidence that I actually could write until a stranger, now a friend, a children’s literature author and instructor, wrote me a note on an assignment that said, “My dear, Carolyn, you have a gift, use it well.”  That seemed to be all I needed, besides my husband’s support and encouragement to go for it.
Since my husband and I do not have children, I wondered if I would be able to relate to families and tell their stories.  I’ve found that families are intricate, close relationships with many layers, which gives a writer a lot to sink her teeth into.  The stories are emotionally touching, physically moving and have a level of spirituality that is undeniable.  Wow!  I love my job!  I am so blessed to be able to share my time on this planet with the wonderful people that I work with and the amazing individuals and families that I have the honor to interview and tell their story.  Thank you for allowing me to do what I love best…write.
Forsyth Family has filled a place in my heart and a role in our community in giving voice to the wonderful people who have stories that need to be told.  Thank you for your support of the magazine.  We will continue to do our best with inspiring stories that touch and inspire all of us to be better individuals and better family members.

Teresa Hodge, Account Executive

Teresa Hodge is a transplant from Columbus, Ohio.  After completing her education in Columbus, she came to North Carolina, the home of her mother and grandparents.  Moving from NC to California, then to Florida, she finally returned “home” to NC in 1993.  She loves living in Winston-Salem, a big, “little” city, as she calls it.  Teresa worked many years in the corporate world before starting her own business in 2002.  Traveling is a passion and she got to do lots of it during those years in a business capacity.  Now she travels for fun.  In 2005 Teresa picked up a copy of Forsyth Woman magazine at her client’s business and was so impressed and excited about the magazine (there was nothing in Forsyth County like it), she called to inquire about advertising her web design business.  That led to a luncheon meeting with Keela Johnson, the publisher.  She had her “Ah ha!” moment (to quote Oprah)  and, as they say, “the rest is history.”  According to Teresa, the best part of working with Forsyth Woman is meeting the interesting people in the business community, learning about their businesses and their advertising needs, and then meeting those needs.  In addition, getting to know and work with all the women that make Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family magazines possible has been a real blessing for her.  You can contact Teresa at 499.0640 or email Teresa@forsythmags.com.

Jennifer Fox Boyle, Writer
My favorite quote is from Henry David Thoreau, when he stated, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.  Live the life you have imagined.”  As an avid graduate student, young wife, and novice resident to Winston-Salem, I am realizing this means embracing the small and the big, the everyday, as well as hope for the future.
I am originally from Hickory, NC, which sits in the North Carolina foothills.  From Hickory, I made my way to Charlotte to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and obtained my Bachelor of Arts in English (cum laude) with a minor in American Studies.  While there, I worked as a research assistant for the Center for Transportation Policy Studies and Regional Homeland Security.
During my undergraduate career, I also met my husband, Josh Boyle, a Winston-Salem native.  We met on a blind date my first year of college, dated for four years, and got married in October 2008.  Josh’s family has lived in the Forsyth area for generations.  He works with various family businesses, and in the real estate market.
I am currently a graduate student in English at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, specializing in Teaching Rhetoric and Composition.  This past semester, I concentrated on the rhetoric of women writers and how women communicate with one another and the world.  I am absolutely thrilled to be a writer for Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family magazines.  Writing has always been a passion of mine and I am hoping my talents will spread across the pages and into your homes every month.
My interests outside of writing include deep-sea fishing, gardening, and boutique shopping.  I am also a dedicated Juvenile Diabetes Advocate, and have been since my father passed away from the disease.  I cannot wait to dive into all of the exciting qualities the Forsyth area has to offer and meet the wonderful Forsyth community!

Denise Tucker, Writer

Thank you for visiting Forsyth Family’s website! My name is Denise Tucker and I am a writer and administrator for Forsyth Family magazine. Though born in Gastonia, NC, I have lived in Forsyth County for the majority of my life. It is home and I am happy to be raising my son in a city that is small enough to feel like a community and large enough to offer diversity.

Working for Forsyth Family is truly a privilege as it affords such a unique opportunity to communicate with other residents about issues that are specific to Forsyth County! In addition to the work I do with Forsyth Family and sister publication Forsyth Woman, I am a freelance marketing and administrative consultant for a variety of small businesses around the country.

In my free time, I enjoy knitting, spinning, reading, watching movies, and during the school year – I like to volunteer at my son’s school. My ultimate hobby is Gone With the Wind – though
some would call it an obsession. I have been a GWTW collector since I was 18 and frequently travel to various GWTW events.

Again, thank you for visiting Forsyth Family’s website and for being a Forsyth Family reader!

Emily Carter, Writer

Emily Eileen Carter is a North Carolina native, having lived all over the state, although she claims Chapel Hill, NC as home.  Emily graduated from Northwood High School in Pittsboro, NC in 1999, and went on to attend the University of North Carolina in Asheville. After graduating from UNC-Asheville in 2004, Emily went on to pursue her international interests and began working as a Communications Coordinator for Sister Cities International in Washington, DC.  But, alas, the cubicle was not for “Miss Em,” and she decided to try her hand at teaching.  Emily graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in May of 2009 with her Masters of ESL (English as a Second Language) Education.  Emily married Brad Dodson at Tanglewood Park on June 20, 2009, and moved back with her husband to his hometown of Winston-Salem. Emily teaches English as a Second Language full time and does freelance writing on the side.

Kelly Melang has taken on many names in her life. Daughter to Norma and John McKeon, she began her writing career in the 6th grade with a journal given to her by her father. Wife to Jeff Melang, she’s enjoyed 22 years and lived in cool places like Boston, Fells Point, MD, Orlando, Washington, DC, Alexandria, VA, and Atlanta, GA, while following her husband’s career. Other career names have included everything from Computer Help Desk Technician and Temporary Help Coordinator, to IBM AS400 Salesperson and Computer Instructor. After 15 years of marriage and settling in Winston-Salem, Kelly took on her next name: Mother to two children, Wolfgang and Max Melang. God has blessed her with these two wonderful people and a sense of humor that added another name…Humorist. Kelly writes humorous essays about being a mother, being over 40, being a woman and being an athlete. As an Athlete, what started at as way to fit into her jeans has turned into a lifelong obsession/passion. She’s competed in marathons and triathlons. She’s climbed Grandfather Mountain and Howard’s Knob, followed WAY behind the Kenyans in marathons, run in tutus, run barefoot, and swum in lakes and oceans. In 2008, Kelly crossed the half Ironman off her bucket list. Even though her friends call her crazy, she still wants to add the name Ironman to her list. With the name of Author, Kelly has written 4 romance novels (yes, bodice-ripping ones), 6 children’s stories, 2 contemporary novels and self-published 2 collections of humorous essays. And there are still many stories swimming around Kelly’s head. The Melang family loves being outdoors, and together they’ve added on the names Hiker, Biker, Skier and Sailor in Winston-Salem and Beech Mountain. Following her family’s motto, “Discover Life,” Kelly enjoys living life to its fullest with a completed bucket list as her goal.

Meghan E. W. Corbett

Meghan Corbett, a contributing writer for Forsyth Family and Forsyth Woman, knows Winston-Salem like the back of her hand. Aside from her four years at North Carolina State University, she has lived in Winston-Salem since day one. With graduation in sight, it is very important to Meghan to focus on her goal of becoming a professional writer. She lives with her husband and the second love of her life, her 4-year-old beagle mutt, Moze, whom she rescued from the local animal shelter almost a year ago.
