I have some information you really need to pass on to your parents. As most readers know, I am new to the area, but I just found out about the coolest event of the year here in Winston-Salem!
On March 15th from 1-5pm, Forsyth Magazines is holding its Forsyth Family Expo (previously known as Summer Camp Expo) at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds in the Education Building. From what I’ve been told, there are going to be some really great vendors there, but there will also be a bounce house, face painting, music, games and even a photo booth! This is the event that you need to bring your parents to because it’s fun for the whole family!
Stacy Leighton, author, illustrator and owner of IncreDibble Resources, will be there leading some mini parenting workshops. Studio Create will be there doing a fun make and take activity and creating a collaborative “art bomb” (read more on page 70). If you’re begging your parents to let you go to summer camp, there are going to be a lot of different programs there for your parents to see.
Did you know? March is Incredible Kid Month, so all kids should wear a costume! Now, I know what you’re thinking… March, Leprechauns! But, I have decided in honor of the release of my new book “English, Scottish and Irish Ballads,” (and let’s be honest, since I’ll use any excuse to wear a costume), I will dress up too! I’m coming as a pirate since my new book has a chapter on Sea Shanties. Me and me crew (how’s that for pirate lingo?) will be telling folks about the music lessons that I offer. And so, if you come as a pirate, I will give you a free five-minute music lesson on your instrument of choice! Well, I’ll tell you what, even if you don’t come as a pirate, I’ll still give you the lesson. We’ll have stringed instruments, a keyboard, hand drums and who knows what other noisemakers we’ll bring out for you to try!
There’s also going to be a fashion show that I know you’re gonna wanna see (okay, Mom is going to want to see)!
Forsyth Magazine’s own Lisa Doss will be there informing families about something near and dear to her heart… books! I know you’re going to want to stop by and check out her table.
There’s a rumor going around too about a special guest that will be there. I don’t want to mention any names and get you all excited, but…oh whatever! I’ll just tell you! Sparky the Firedog will be there as well, and I think he might bring some of his friends from the fire department to tell us about safety! And speaking of safety, there are going to be people there to talk about the anti-bullying campaign. Sounds to me like this event will be a one-stop safety event as well.
I’ve heard this event is always more fun for kids than jumping off a brand new mattress into a bucket of mud, and it just keeps getting bigger each year! I’m looking forward to all of the fun and all of the businesses that will be a part of it, but something I’m especially excited about seeing is the martial arts demonstration from Tiger Kim’s. So, for all you kids that want to dress up as ninjas, you’ll want to check that out as well!
One of the most special guests this year, in my opinion, is Second Harvest Food Bank. To get in to the event, all you and your parents need to do is bring five cans of food or $5 and it’s going to all be given to Second Harvest Food Bank!
One other great thing that I have to tell you about — Winston-Salem Fairgrounds will be offering free admission to its Ice Skating rink to those who attend the Expo! That’s $7 off! Skate rental is $3 — last chance for ice-skating this season. Just park and enter through Gate 5 off of Deacon Boulevard, and you can come in and access all the fun and excitement for yourself!
Can you think of a better way to kick off springtime? Me neither; I am so excited! I can’t wait until March 15th! Also, if the very unlikely were to happen, a snow date is planned for the following Sunday.
