Shannon Hodge, President of Home Instead Senior Care (HISC), serving Forsyth County for 15 years including 8 years of progressive employment at the HISC office in Statesville, NC, prior to becoming an owner. She has a first-hand knowledge of the business from an administrative and practical application perspective. Their Forsyth County office is approaching milestones of 1000 CAREGivers employed and 2000 clients served.
Shannon shared that in the beginning the business model was based more on companionship, ensuring that meal preparation and medication reminders were of high importance, perhaps some light housekeeping, and allowing clients to remain independent and to allow clients to do as much as possible with safety assistance from CAREGivers. Now, in addition to those services, ensuring that CAREGivers adapt to their clients’ varying personalities and needs is of critical importance. Maintaining the lifestyle a client has been accustomed to over the years alleviates a degree of stress and creates a sense of stability and independence for the client. “Providing care based on the client’s expectations and wants, enhances their quality of life,” explained Shannon. “Enhancing their quality of life and meeting the needs of our clients is our goal and purpose, our calling. The ability to live in your own home, surrounded by memories is a privilege. Just as seasons come and bring change, aging brings about the similar changes and this may warrant your loved one to leave the comfort of a familiar environment in order to age safely. We believe, home is wherever you call home and wherever your loved one can thrive through their seasons of aging. We also provide services when clients are in this alternative living situation.”
Balancing the needs of clients with their family expectations is often something of a high-wire act. Compromising may be necessary, but the client is the priority. Shannon shared that in some cases services begin on a smaller scale until a rapport can be established and the value that a CAREGiver situation provides is established. “Nurturing a client’s sense of self-worth and their joy in whatever interests them is paramount in a client/CAREGiver relationship.”
In addition to the one-on-one CAREGiver relationship, Home Instead Senior Care visits the home every 90 days, conducts on-line surveys, and surveys via third-party advocates. These additional check-in endeavors are designed to ensure that client needs are fully met and adjusted, based on the client’s expectations at that time. In addition, training opportunities are available on an on-going basis for CAREGivers. Clients and CAREGivers set their mutual schedules to the benefit of the client and the staff assists in coordinating their time together. Home Instead Senior Care routinely works with home health (i.e., Medicare) and hospice organizations for seamless care of their clients.
