Having a consistent, high-quality grooming regimen is just as important for men as it is for women. Generally speaking, however, going to the barbershop is more of an unpleasant chore for most men; we put it off and try to avoid it as long as possible. This is because a salon is typically a place where we feel less comfortable. Speaking from personal experience in the past, I used to stretch the interval between haircuts as far as possible, because I saw it as a poor use of my free time, and it wasn’t ever an enjoyable experience. Enter Carlos Carvana, proprietor of The Oval Office barbershop located in downtown Winston-Salem, next to Foothills Brewery. Carlos’ boutique barbershop has an upscale, yet welcoming feeling. Upon entering, you are not a customer; you are a friend. His shop captures a sense of classic Americana, which creates a fantastic atmosphere. After being warmly greeted by Mr. Carvana and his staff, you are offered a soft drink and then seated in a luxurious barber chair. Speaking from personal experience, I have gone to Carlos for a little over a year now, and it is always something I look forward to. It’s always a pleasure to take a break out of my busy schedule and get a haircut because of the quality of service Carlos brings to the table. Nothing feels better than a fresh cut, followed by a relaxing hot towel on your face to melt the stress away. His shop is a place where my friends and I often meet; there is a sense of family and community in his shop that never disappoints.
Carlos is a highly detail-oriented barber whose goal is not to rush you out the door before the next customer. He takes the time to listen to what you want, and is very patient. With more than twenty years of barbering excellence, Carlos brings a level of expertise to his work that is unparalleled in other shops in the City. Having a strong focus on his primarily male clientele, he has developed a great sensitivity for catering to the needs of men. Unlike most barbers in the area, Carlos is a fourth-generation barber who takes his craft seriously. As does every young boy, he looked up to his father, who was also a barber. After finishing high school, he decided to take up the family trade and open his own shop. He traveled all over the world learning diverse cultural aspects of the trade and everything that went into it. Before opening his shop seven years ago, he went to places like Rome, London, and Las Vegas, studying the greatest barber shops around. He learned techniques from the best and brought those back to his shop, located in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem. He believed he could raise the bar for innovative hair design relative to other local shops that focused primarily on men. He was determined to bring his deep knowledge of the trade to the core of his hometown—a town he believes in. He saw the potential downtown Winston-Salem had, and acted on it before the recent restoration of the area. His goal was to create a grooming oasis for men of all hair types and ethnicities who seek the finest in creative, high-level barbering. He got it right.
This Father’s Day weekend The Oval Office will be running half-priced razor shave with haircuts, gift card purchases excluded.
